In a much-expected move, the axe fell on Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq who lost their jobs as the selectors of national cricket after the debacle on the American soil where Pakistan lost it’s two out of three group stage matches of 2024 T20 World Cup.
A statement issued by the PCB said: “The Pakistan Cricket Board today confirmed that it has notified Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz that their services will no longer be required on the national selection committee setup. Abdul Razzaq was a member of the men’s and women’s selection committee, while Wahab was a member of the men’s selection committee.”
Wahab and Razzaq were members of a seven-member selection committee of equals that did not have a chairman. Wahab Riaz was also the senior manager of the Pakistan cricket squad at the T20 World Cup. It appears that other members of the selection committee, Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq and Bilal Afzal, other than the coach and captain of the respective format, have been spared for the time being.
It is expected that the idea of a leaderless national selection committee will be dropped and a more traditional body of selectors, with a chairman, will be formed to make future selections.
